feelings got big.
Okay.
What kind of big?
You don't have to explain the whole thing.
Pick what's happening right now. We'll start there.
you're at a 10.
Then we're not figuring it out yet.
First: body.
When you're this activated, more thinking isn't necessarily the useful part yet. Pick the option that sounds least annoying.
Did we move even 1%?
good. even 1% counts.
What does your brain need next?
We are not aiming for magically calm. We're just trying to give you a little more choice.
okay. still big.
Don't force calm.
Let's make the environment do some of the work.
right now
Change ONE thing around you.
Lower a light. Leave the room. Put the phone face-down. Take off the uncomfortable thing. Stop the music. Sit instead of stand. Ask for five minutes alone.
and then
Give yourself ten minutes where you are not required to solve the problem.
The problem can still exist without being handled at peak intensity.
your brain keeps pulling you back in.
Let's give it something happening right now to notice.
You don't have to stop crying. You don't have to stop feeling it. We're just helping your attention touch the present again.
Check in. Where are you now?
you want to react.
Your only job right now:
Don't make this harder to repair.
The feeling gets to be real. It just doesn't automatically get control of the send button.
Give the urge a little time to lose some volume.
βI'm too worked up to answer this well right now. Give me a little bit and I'll come back.β
While you wait:
now we can get curious.
What was already in the room?
Sometimes The Thingβ’ is the whole thing. Sometimes it lands on a nervous system that was already carrying six other things. Tap anything that was already true.
useful clue
The size of the reaction isn't always the size of this one moment.
What was already happening in your body, brain or day can change how much capacity you had when this landed.
Now: what did the moment hit?
Don't find the perfect emotion. Find the part that feels closest.
You don't have to prove that's the answer. We're looking for useful information, not a courtroom verdict on your own feelings.
you understand it. it's just still here.
Then stop asking yourself to solve it again.
Understanding a feeling and being finished feeling it are not the same thing. Let's help your brain stop reopening the case every 14 seconds.
01
Say what is already known.
βI'm hurt because that mattered to me.β
βI'm angry because that crossed a line.β
βI'm disappointed because I wanted this to go differently.β
02
Separate NOW from LATER.
Ask: Is there anything I actually need to do about this in the next ten minutes?
03
Then give your brain a stopping point.
βI know what happened. I know how I feel about it. I don't need to keep figuring it out right now.β
Now change channels on purpose: shower, walk, familiar show, music, laundry, outside, pet the cat, make food β something concrete enough to give your attention somewhere else to land.
okay. it already happened.
Let's repair what actually needs repairing.
Your feeling can make sense and something you did while feeling it can still need repair.
βI don't like how I handled that. I want to come back to it, but I need a little time before I can do that well.β
If you're ready:
What did you actually say or do? No character assassination of yourself required.
The feeling isn't the problem. The behavior may have landed in a way you don't feel good about.
That gives both of you useful information for next time.
Apologize. Clarify. Try again. Ask what they need. Follow through where you can.
βI was really upset, but I don't like how I handled it. I shouldn't have ___. I wish I had ___ instead. I'm sorry. Can we try that part again?β
Shame is not one of the repair steps.
you don't know. that's okay.
Don't figure it out yet.
Let's just find the next useful thing.
quick check
Does your body feel revved up β hot, shaky, tight, restless, heart going, NEED TO DO SOMETHING?
one more
Is your brain looping β replaying, predicting, analyzing, or dragging you back into it?
okay.
You don't have to finish the feeling.
You just needed a little more room around it.
If it comes back up, you can come back too. You don't have to start in the same place next time.
