For the kid inside the behavior

I want to help my kid understand themselves.

They already know something feels different.

They just may not have the words for it yet.

why is this harder for me?

why do I do that?

do they get me?

Okay, grown-up β€” bring them in

Hey, you.

Brains can be weird. Let's see if yours does any of these things. You might recognize a bunch of them, one of them, or none of them. That's okay.

DOES YOUR BRAIN EVER DO THIS?

You know exactly what you're supposed to do... and still don't start.

okay. get up.

seriously.

GET. UP.

...why am I still sitting here?

That doesn't automatically mean you're lazy. Sometimes knowing what to do and getting your brain to start doing it are two different jobs.

Words you can borrow

β€œI know what I need to do. I'm having trouble getting started.”

Doesn't sound like you? Totally fine.

There isn't one way an ADHD brain feels. We're just getting curious about yours.

See what you just did?

You put words to something your brain does.

Knowing what's happening doesn't mean you get a free pass. It means you have a better chance of knowing what you need, asking for help, or fixing something when it goes sideways.

Understanding your brain is about learning how to work with it.

YOUR BRAIN KEEPS RECEIPTS

But sometimes it files them under the wrong heading.

Your brain is really good at noticing patterns. Sometimes it decides what the pattern means a little too fast.

BRAIN RECEIPT

THINGS THAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK

MON

Forgot what I was supposed to bring upstairs.

TUE

Everyone started working before I figured out what page we were on.

WED

Got told β€œwatch your tone.” I thought I was answering normally.

THU

Got way more upset about something than I expected to.

TOTAL: 4 HARD MOMENTS

brain: noted.

AND SOMEHOW THE BRAIN TOTALS THAT UP AS...

β€œSo apparently I'm...”

bad at everything the difficult one not trying hard enough hold up.

Those are four moments.
Not a personality test.

What happened can tell you something useful without telling you who you are.

β€œProof something is wrong with me.”

MAYBE THE BETTER QUESTION ISN'T

β€œWhat's wrong with me?”

↓

β€œWhat can I learn about me?”

You can learn from what happened without using it as evidence against yourself.

HERE'S THE TRICKY PART

Other people can't read your brain.

You can be figuring out what's happening inside you... and still have it come out completely wrong on the outside.

WHAT CAME OUT

β€œI KNOW!”

WHAT I MIGHT BE TRYING TO SAY

I heard you. My brain is getting more stuck every time you remind me.

WHAT CAME OUT

β€œI DON'T KNOW!”

WHAT I MIGHT BE TRYING TO SAY

I know something feels wrong. I don't know what it is yet.

Those aren't translations for you. Maybe β€œI don't know” really does mean β€œI don't know.” The point is learning to notice what you were trying to say.

SO HOW DO YOU SAY IT?

You don't need a perfect explanation. You just need somewhere to start.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

I lost part of the directions.

WHAT I NEED

The next step again.

WHAT I CAN SAY

β€œI got the first part. What's next?”

not a magic formula. just a way to find the words.

ONE MORE THING

Asking for what you need doesn't mean the answer will always be yes.

You: β€œI need ten minutes before we leave.”
Someone else: β€œWe don't have ten.”
β€œYou can have five, and then we need to go.”

Knowing yourself helps you join the conversation. It doesn't mean you get to decide the whole conversation.

AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO EXPLAIN YOUR WHOLE BRAIN

Sometimes a few words are enough.

β€œI'm stuck.” β€œCan you say that differently?” β€œCan I try again?”

The better you know yourself, the easier it gets to let other people know you, too.

THIS IS ME.

There are a lot of things that make you you. Some are loud and easy for other people to notice. Some are quieter. Some might be things almost nobody knows but you.

all of it is information about you ↓

None of these pieces has to be the whole story.

Some tell you what you love. Some tell you what you need. Some show you what's hard. Some you're still figuring out. They can all belong to the same person.

some things are LOUD

Other people notice them pretty quickly.

some things are quiet.

You might be the only one who knows they're there.

AND HERE'S SOMETHING WEIRD

Most people won't know every part of you.

A TEACHER MIGHT KNOW

loves science Β· talks a lot Β· forgets papers Β· asks great questions

A FRIEND MIGHT KNOW

hilarious Β· hates sleepovers Β· loyal Β· absolutely will not share fries

SOMEONE AT HOME MIGHT KNOW

needs quiet after school Β· gives incredible hugs Β· gets nervous before new things

They're all getting to know you.
They're just getting to know different parts.

THAT'S THE POINT

Knowing yourself isn't having yourself all figured out.

It's noticing what you learn about yourself and using that information to understand what works for you.

you can keep learning as you go.

AND SOMETIMES...

You're going to get it wrong.

You can know yourself really well and still interrupt, snap, forget, overreact, or say something you wish you hadn't. Knowing yourself doesn't mean never messing up.

SOMETIMES A MOMENT GOES LIKE THIS

somebody keeps talking when you've had enough...

β€œLEAVE ME ALONE!”

...okay. that came out bigger than I meant.
same overwhelmed brain. better words.

β€œI'm getting really overwhelmed. Can I have a few minutes? ”

but trying again doesn't make the first thing disappear.

If you hurt someone, broke something, ignored a boundary, or made a choice you wish you hadn't, there might still be something to fix. Understanding what happened just gives you more information about what to do next.

TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUE

β€œI was really overwhelmed.”

and

β€œI shouldn't have yelled at you.”

OKAY. SO WHAT NOW?

That's where repair comes in.

notice it own it fix what you can learn something

β€œThat came out wrong. I'm sorry. Can I try again? ”

WORDS YOU CAN BORROW

β€œI messed that up.” β€œCan I try again?” β€œI was overwhelmed, but I shouldn't have said that.”

messing up doesn't mean you're back at the beginning.

You can notice it.
You can repair it.
You can come back.

that's part of knowing yourself, too.
